gas certificate of conformity (COC)
WE ISSUE A CERTIFICATE OF CONFORMITY (COC) WITH EACH INSTALLATION OR MODIFICATION TO AN INSTALLATION AS REQUIRED BY SANS & PRESSURE EQUIPMENT REGULATIONS
As expert LPG Installers – certified and registered – we promise exceptional guidance, service, and craftsmanship to ensure that your installations and upkeep are secure and compliant. The COC you receive on completion of your Gas Installation is a very important document for a number of reasons.
In the first place it is a legal requirement that only registered gas practitioners are allowed to perform LP Gas installations. It is also a legal requirement that the owner or user of any LP Gas installation must have a Certificate of Conformity for his installation, which may only be issued by a Registered LP Gas Installer and only for the scope of work which that Installer has been certified to work on.
Another important reason for you to have a COC is to manage your Risk. Should you fail to submit a valid Certificate of Conformity (COC) for any gas installations on your property, your insurance provider is likely to deny your claim in the event of fire damage of any nature. Furthermore, the manufacturer of gas appliances will always ask for your COC before they will entertain any warranty repairs, should there be problems with your appliance.
Probably the most important reason for you to have a Gas Installation done by a Registered Installer is the Safety of you and your loved ones. If you have used a Registered Installer and obtained a COC, you will have the peace of mind that the installation has been done according to the latest Regulations (SANS 10087-1: Edition 7 of 2024), properly tested, that it will function as intended and most importantly it is SAFE.
WHY DO I NEED A NEW COC WHEN I SELL MY HOME?
Imagine buying a house and then finding out that the gas and electrical systems are all illegal and dangerous. Fortunately the law protects us against such unscrupulous Sellers.
Your Transferring Attorneys will ask for a Gas COC not older than 3 months when it is time to to transfer your property into the name of the Buyer. This is the same as for the Electrical and Electric Fence COCs.
If you have an existing COC it will cost alot less than if you do not, because the Regulation has changed in September 2024, so if you have a COC on the older Regulation, we will not have to upgrade your installation to the latest 2024 Edition 7 of SANS 10087-1. In this case we can simply check that the installation is still sound, do a pressure test and issue a new COC.
Unfortunately if you do not have a copy of your old COC, we will have to upgrade the installation to comply to all the latest regulations, which means that at the least we will need to add test points, but in some older installations we might need to do quite a lot of upgrading to make the installation compliant.
HOT TIP FOR THE DAY: If you are BUYING a property please make sure that you receive a fresh Certificate of Conformance and send it to your Insurance company immediately.
MORE QUESTIONS ABOUT GAS COCs
How much does a Gas COC cost?
Your Registered Gas Installer will have to come and check the installation to determine if it is compliant. After that we will give you a quotation for the work needed to make the installation compliant and issue the new COC. If you have a copy of your old COC, nothing has changed on the installation and no hoses older than 5 years need to be replaced, a COC could cost as little as R1,100. If there is no current COC available the installation will need to be upgraded to the latest Regulations, which will have cost implications.
How long is a Gas COC valid for?
A Gas COC remains valid until there is any change to the installation or until change of ownership. Therefore, if you replace any part of the installation, e.g. put in a new hob or regulator, the old COC is no longer valid.
How do I know if my installation is Compliant and will pass a COC?
We have put a Blog Post with more information on the regulations HERE for your information, but this is a very important disclaimer that it only deals with a few of the main regulations which we need to look at to have a compliant installation.
So the short answer is to get a Registered Installer to come and inspect your installation and tell you if the installation will qualify for a COC and if not, what needs to be done to make it compliant. We can do that free of charge – just call us on 083 630 5578.
It is not the objective of this webpage to try to show our clints all the rules and regulations. We also don’t make the rules and regulations. We simply have to know them and comply with them.
SANS 10087-1: Edition 7 of 2024 was approved and published in August 2024 and has replace all previous Regulations. This document comprises 126 pages and it is available from the SABS Web Store at a cost of R1,279.95 for any interested party.
Can I do my own Installation and just get a Registered Installer to come and Inspect it and issue a COC?
You may indeed do that.
However, for the cost of the materials, specialised tools, fittings, a copy of the SANS standard, your valuable time, not to mention your embarrassment and aggravation when the Registered Installer points out the things we will need to repair before we can issue the COC, it really is not worth it.
A Gas Installation is not really that expensive. We suggest that you just get a professional to do it from scratch.
