Protecting Your Home and Loved Ones: The Importance of LP Gas Compliance

As responsible homeowners, we all take measures to protect our valuable assets from potential loss or damage. However, when it comes to LP gas installations in our homes, compliance with regulations is not only a matter of safeguarding our property but also our loved ones.

Insurance Guidelines for LP Gas Installations

In the unfortunate event of a fire or other damages, an insurance claim may be repudiated if the homeowner cannot produce a valid Certificate of Conformance (COC) for their gas installations. To avoid such a situation and ensure compliance, it is essential to follow these guidelines:

  1. Use only registered installers to install any LP gas equipment in your home. Be aware that some installers may not be registered or have expired licenses, making any COC they issue invalid.
  2. Check the SAQCC license card of your installer and ensure that their license is still valid.
  3. Remember that a plumber or electrician cannot install gas water heaters without a valid SAQCC Gas license card.
  4. Obtain a Certificate of Conformance (COC) after any installations or modifications to your LP gas installations, ensuring that all appliances installed are listed on the COC and that your name and address have been correctly filled in.
  5. Remember that a COC only covers the appliances for which it was issued. If you replace or remove any appliance, you will need an updated COC. If you add any appliances, the old COC is no longer valid.
  6. Use only registered installers to install any LP gas equipment in your home. Be aware that some installers may not be registered or have expired licenses, making any COC they issue invalid.
  7. Submit your COC to your insurance company immediately after receiving it, and keep a copy in a safe place for proof of legal compliance.
  8. If you already have LP gas installations without a COC, obtain one for existing installations and submit it to your insurance company.
  9. Remember that compliance with regulations is about managing your insurance risk and ensuring the safety and well-being of your family and loved ones.
